WHAT IS PILATES
The Method of Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates who lived from 1883-1967. Pilates spent much of his youth as a sick child which motivated him to study fitness and challenge his own body in the circus and boxing ring. It was through these experiences and self-work in his body that he began the path to creating an entire syllabus of exercises. Many say he was ahead of his time in the realm of physical therapy and what we call mind/ body movement today. The methods of Pilates was originally called Contrology (the study of controlled movement).
The movements in Pilates are intended to flow from one exercise into the next, building on strength, stamina and flexibility. Breathing patterns are established with muscular effort and the sequence ideally is performed in a particular order from start to finish.
Pilates can be performed with only the use of a mat. However, Pilates is also performed using larger equipment. These larger pieces of equipment can provide resistance for both strength and support depending on the needs of the individual.
The journey begins with a dedication to the practice. Pilates provides much more than just an hour of exercise. It is a foundational form of body work that leads to all the other wonderful movement goals we wish to have.
